When Nigeria hosts the African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) forum in October, the country’s media will cover it. We’ve been working with the local Bible Society team, led by Samuel Adesola Sanusi, to prepare the ground for this exciting, Bible-elevating event which will be held in the capital, Abuja.
‘Mobilising ABLI in Nigeria was a huge success,’ said Girma, Bible Society’s liaison with ABLI, about his recent trip to Abuja. ‘There were a number of media outlets who were persuaded by our message and promised to collaborate with us this coming October. Among them is the Nigerian Television Authority, Africa’s largest state-owned broadcaster.’
The forum will be framed by values expressed in Philippians 4.8 and Isaiah 60.1, to focus on what’s true and honourable, and to enter into new life. Many prominent Nigerians will be involved, including academics and politicians, as well as church leaders. It will culminate in a special day for aspiring young leaders to engage with how the Bible can encourage and challenge them in their various professional spheres.
The current First Lady, Remi Tinubu, an ordained pastor and former senator, endorsed the work of ABLI in spiritualising African leadership. ‘The First Lady’s deep personal faith and love for the Bible shone through,’ said Joanna, our International Operations Manager, who helped steer these preparatory events. ‘Listening to her share candidly about the significance of the Bible in personal and public life was the highlight of the visit for me, and it reminded me that Bible Societies are uniquely positioned to engage with national leaders as ambassadors for the Bible.’
The ABLI forum will run from 21 to 24 October 2024 in Abuja and it’ll be shown on Nigerian television. The team also hopes to live-stream parts of it so that, for the first time, it might be possible to experience it from the comfort of your own home.
The African Biblical Leadership Initiative wants to see African communities transformed as their leaders embrace the message of the Bible. Your support for Bible mission around the world drives forward ABLI’s dynamic training and mentorship programmes.
