Someone has said that it’s possible to live for 40 days without food, three days without water and eight minutes without air – but only one second without hope.
It might be an exaggeration, but it says something profound about the way human beings are designed. We aren’t just machines who produce and consume food and goods. We are made for something more, because we were created in the image of God. That’s why deliberately removing hope from someone’s life – through abusing or enslaving them, for example – is such a terrible sin. It offends God, because it’s an attempt to close down someone’s future – and God promises a bright and glorious future to those who trust in him.
