For me, there is one scripture that changed the whole of my life and the life of my family

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘For me, there is one scripture that changed the whole of my life and the life of my family. When I was growing up, my Dad abused me and I almost lost my life. My first memory, I was three years old and I was hiding behind my brother and my Dad was throwing my Mum across the room.

‘He physically and verbally abused me. When you came home, you didn’t know what to expect. You live on a knife edge. It was very destroying. I felt like nobody.

‘I heard an amazing sermon about Ephesians 6.12 that changed everything, changed the whole fight. It says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

‘When I heard this verse, my whole vision of the situation changed. I removed the pain, the abuse and I went to the spiritual realm. I had the vision that I had to pray for not just my Dad, but generations of our family.

‘So, I fasted and prayed for my Dad for two weeks. From that, he accepted Jesus Christ. That changed the whole perspective in our family. He’s the best Dad I ever had. He almost killed me. Now he prays for me.

‘I’m still shocked that my Dad has given his life to Christ. Oh my days, Lord, you are so big! I didn’t expect that. I don’t know what’s going on. It will take years for me to digest it, I think.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
