I hit a big low last November

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I hit a big low last November. Having earned a good salary as a teacher, I found myself on universal credit with just £404 per month. It was very difficult. How do I live on that? I went into a dark pit.

‘One day I went to the beach. I decided that I was going to walk into the sea. It was all too much. I had taken my shoes and socks off. There was a fisherman. I felt a tug and he said, “Please don’t do anything stupid”. He sat with me, and what was the nicest, he prayed with me. He said, “You are going to get through this. God is here for you.”

‘I’m getting counselling and I’m glad I’m still alive. I look at things from a different perspective now. I hope God helps me to help other people in that position.

‘I’ve memorised Psalm 73.26 which says, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever”. I go back to this every day. I get the strength I need by listening to him and reading his word. If I don’t, I go off track and when I was in the depths of despair, I wasn’t listening to him.

‘Scripture gets you out of the doldrums. I know that there is a bigger picture. I don’t know what it is, but he does, because He is my “strength” and my “portion”. I didn’t see that before. When I’m yelling at him, I know he’s there with me. It’s a comforting feeling.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
