I love the story of the Emmaus road in Luke 24

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I love the story of the Emmaus road in Luke 24, when the disciples realise that it had been Jesus walking with them and they say, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

‘I became a Christian and then drifted a bit. But when I moved house, I was offered the chance to do a Bishop’s Certificate. It opened up the Bible to me and made it OK to question things, which was a liberation to me. It excited me. Reading the Bible excited me! My heart was warmed by reading the Bible. I had not expected that in the slightest.

‘My husband absolutely was not a believer. He was a communist, a very radical person. We started going through what I was learning together and he became a Christian, which was very, very exciting.

‘Learning about the Bible has given me a much firmer foundation for life. I’m much more able to share things with others and more able to hold my own in conversations about the Bible. I’m not a great evangelist, but I have a foundation that I feel sure of. Even now my heart is still warmed when I read the Bible.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
