My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I love the story of the wedding at Cana in John 2, where Jesus turns water into wine.
It really demonstrates the humanness of Jesus in a very strong way, that he chose his first miracle to make people happy.
‘He's slightly peevish with his mother, you know, telling her “My time is not yet come, woman”, but he really wants the party to be a good party. All the human traits are there. There's a kindness, there's love for other people. He's mixing the God traits and the human traits.
‘I do like to think of Jesus as being as much human as God, because it makes him that much more approachable. I think it also shows that God wants the best for us. He chose the best possible wine, it's not just plonk – not that you'd expect anything else, but it does show that he wants good things for us.
‘I've been very fortunate in my life. I have a lovely wife and three lovely sons, all doing well. We've had our share of illnesses and misfortunes, but I've been very blessed.
‘I'm an architect, and I do like designing party spaces – houses for parties. Our own house is brilliant for parties and we've had great parties – though I'm not really a party person. But I do have a sense of the richness of life and the blessings of the everyday, and how God is there in the everyday things.’
