My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I was in my early 30s and my first husband and I went on holiday to Trinidad with our three-year-old son. It was a big deal, because it hadn’t been financially viable before. While we were there, he was offered a job and we decided to stay. It felt like a gift from God.

‘A year later my first husband decided that he liked someone else, and I found myself a single parent. The easy option would have been to pack up and come back to England, but I decided to stay. I found myself very alone.

‘I was working three jobs, at the American Chamber of Commerce, working as a waitress and as a tour guide at weekends. I was in survival mode, just taking a day at a time. The words that spoke to me and carried me through that time were from Psalm 27, all of it. It begins, “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” And it ends, “Wait for the Lord, be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord”.

‘This was a period of time that lasted for five years, and during that time Psalm 27 was my bread and butter, the air I breathed. I went to it all the time. I clung to those verses, and things improved.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
