If you look through my Bible

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘If you look through my Bible, there’s only one verse that is underlined. It’s 1 Samuel 18.14, “And David had success in all his undertaking, for the Lord was with him.”

‘It was a verse given to me when I went to university. It lived with me through my university time. And it continues to speak to me now.

‘I had a house mate who was much more able intellectually and she worked much harder than me. But we both came out with the same result. I put it down to the fact that God had blessed me because I spent a lot of time at Christian Union, at church, going to early morning prayer. By putting Christ first, he blessed me in other areas of my life.

‘Some time ago, I was with my daughter in the park. She wanted to jump off the climbing frame and said, “You are going to catch me, aren’t you Daddy?” I caught her. I felt God saying to me, “It’s time for you to jump and trust me.” So, I left my job as a maths teacher, after 14 years in the job. I hang onto this verse daily. Whatever I do now, I believe that I can have success because of what God is doing in my life.

‘I want to do everything! Tutoring is paying the bills, but I want to do voice over work and I’ve set up a studio in my house.

‘I’m fifteen months in and I haven’t doubted God’s ability to provide for me and I haven’t doubted his blessing on my life, and so far, he has provided. I know God’s got his hand on my life, which is a wonderful comfort and blessing, really.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
