My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'I’m 91. So, in theory, I’ve been shielding. I go for walks, keeping well away from everybody. Occasionally, I knock on people’s doors and stand behind the hedge and talk to people. I use a lot of Zoom to pray for people.
'I do quite a lot of phoning. I have phone calls with older people. One encourages them and generally shares the problems they are facing. I used to visit an old people’s home and do a Bible study every couple of weeks. Now, I have been ringing those people up and having a chat with them and that’s been wonderful.
'The challenge to me over the last few weeks has been Psalm 80, where the writer is sad about the state of his country and that they have drifted away from God. His prayer is that they will return.
'The pandemic gives an extra challenge to share my faith. People are anxious and a lot of people are in need of care because of losing their jobs and that kind of thing. At my age, I don’t get around a lot now. I have been a vicar, a missionary, all sorts of things, but one has to do what one can. It’s been good to hear how the people in the old people’s home are coping despite not being able to live the life that they did. They have been concerned about other people too. God’s calling us to care for each other.'
