I’m a GP

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'I’m a GP. At the moment, we are generally not having face-to-face contact with patients, though we are still seeing patients on video calls and on the telephone. The phone never stops ringing. Patients who were suffering with mental health problems before, are now more worried, and others are finding that the claustrophobia and isolation of lockdown is causing mental health problems.

'I think that, if it wasn’t for knowing the Lord, I would be much more concerned for my own health. You take proper measures, but when you are just able to know that the Lord is in control and that whether you get the infection, or die, it’s all in the Lord’s hands, that takes some of the anxiety away.

'Romans 8:31-32 has been speaking to me over recent weeks. It says, ‘What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Certainly not God, who did not even keep back his own Son, but offered him for us all! He gave us his Son – will he not also freely give us all things?’ What’s wonderful about God’s word is that it gives you perspective. It grounds you.

'This passage gives me perspective, a sense of God’s calling and therefore that my identity is in him. As a health worker, it’s easy to pat ourselves on the back for what we are doing. But this reminds me that God has called me to be where I am and it’s his strength that enables me to do it. It’s an amazing passage that shows me his love.

'It also reminds me that sin is the greatest problem we face, not Covid-19. That’s helped me see a bigger picture than what we’re experiencing right now. It’s helped me to remember to draw near to God in his word, which I do first thing in the morning. It sets me up for the day.'

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
