In 2018, my dad was really ill in hospital

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘In 2018, my dad was really ill in hospital. He was in a coma for 19 weeks with an infection that led to encephalitis. We thought that was it.

‘He was very distressed. I didn’t know how to comfort him. But he had always loved Psalm 23. It had always been a big thing for him. He often preached about it. I knew he could hear me, and so one day, I read it to him really slowly, and stroked his hair.

‘His whole demeaner changed. He calmed down. I saw that there was real power in the word of God. It brought it home to me how amazing Scripture is. It was a really difficult time for the family, but it was amazing to see the physical change in him.

‘He came out of the coma. He’s still with us, though he’s not the man he was. But it’s amazing to see that he came through.

‘The psalm speaks about what God does for us. It’s so much more than what he does in the difficult times. It’s really powerful about how he provides for us.

‘I’d always known Psalm 23, but at that moment, it felt different. It helped me massively. I knew that I could trust God with this and with my dad.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
