My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘My favourite passage is from Philippians 4.4, “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice”. Before I had any faith, I was a non-believing chorister. I have sung this since I was a teenager. I knew it from singing it.

‘I think it is the best bit of the Bible. It has everything. You just need this. I remember reading it, and it clicked. We had it at our wedding, at the kids’ baptisms. It’s there when you are happy and when you are sad. It’s the verse that is there for everything.

‘There isn’t much time for formal prayer now with three small children, but my whole life is prayer, everything I do is prayer. I’m a doctor (though I’m on maternity leave) and my job is prayer. Cooking dinner for the children is prayer. Everything that I do is an act of prayer. I feel God’s presence with me in everything.

‘Now is not a quiet time of life, but that time will come again. Whenever I stop, I know that God has been there guiding me. This wouldn’t be the life I was leading without him being there.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
