My first husband had left me with three small children

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘My first husband had left me with three small children, and I had been on my own for 20 years. I was quite young when my husband left. The children grew up and I met this wonderful, wonderful man, but he wasn’t a Christian. I fell in love, but I thought that there was no possibility of marriage. I struggled with it because I thought I should give him up.

‘I read Psalm 73. It says, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you.”

‘When I read that, I thought that I could survive without this lovely man (with difficulty), but I wouldn’t last five minutes without God. I realised that God came first. I handed him over to God and asked him to bring him into the kingdom.

‘I stood back and my jaw dropped to the floor watching how God brought him into his kingdom. Now, we have been married for 25 years. I needed a partner who could share that centrality of God with me, and that’s what happened.

‘I loved his courtesy. He always respected me. He’s also funny and cultured. He says he’s not perfect, but he cooks and does the shopping. The Lord has spoiled me rotten. It is so remarkable.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
