My husband is a clever man

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘My husband is a clever man. He worked for an oil company. We lived in Saudi Arabia, then the Bahamas. It was just great. There were parties all the time.

‘When we were living in the Bahamas, I was 27 and had three children. I got pregnant again within two months of arriving there. I came home. It was a rough road after that.

‘The company gave my husband two weeks’ holiday a year. He was meant to come when I had the baby. But he went on a rugby tour. That was hard. It looked like everything was rosy, but it wasn’t.

‘After I became pregnant with my fifth child, my Dad and my brother died. That was too hard. I was in despair. It looked like we had a lovely life. We lived in a beautiful house with a lake in America at this stage, but I was thinking, ‘Is this it?’ My husband was away all the time. It was a nightmare.

‘I came back to the UK and decided to go to an evening at the local church about God. I went with my mate who I went tap dancing and to badminton with.

‘They read from 1 John about how God loves us. That spoke to me.

‘After that I couldn’t stop telling my kids about the Lord. I started to read the Bible and it was everything I had ever wanted. I was reading it every day, whenever I could.

‘My nerves had been shot to bits. I was spent emotionally and physically. Everything that I read was about God’s peace. My focus was on that and on praying for my kids. Jesus was everything I wanted.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
