My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘Peter’s mother-in-law is my all-time biblical heroine. I was reading Mark 1, preparing for a sermon, and her story came alive for me. We always hear about how Jesus healed her, she got up and cooked a meal. But when we read that it was the Sabbath, actually we can see that she couldn’t do that. She couldn’t chop or cook or serve. Yet, she was serving. She was leading.
‘I had grown up in churches where women didn’t lead. I faced misogyny in looking for recognition of wanting to train for the ministry. Getting permission to preach, in my background, was difficult. But I persevered and God opened the doors and now I’m going to be ordained in a week and a half.
‘Peter’s mother-in-law (we don’t even know her name) has helped me feel that I am doing the right thing by training for the ministry. Her example says that service isn’t what you think it is.
‘I find inspiration in her faithfulness, her trust and obedience. I’m going to need all of those qualities as I go forward into ministry.
‘She was also a mother-in-law, an older woman, and that gives hope for older women. It’s a tiny story: just two verses, but it really speaks to me.’
