My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘The passage that means the most to me is Psalm 23. I was head girl of the church choir in a high Anglican church. We sang this at Christmas Midnight Mass when I was about ten years old, and I sang the solo.
‘It was a big moment for me, and I was nervous. But one of the old ladies in the choir came over and asked me, “Do you know what the words mean?” She said, “You are going to be alright. God has got you.” It was the first time I had thought about that, the first time I had thought about what we said or sang at church. It went really well, and I loved it.
‘As I’ve got older the verses about being in “the valley of the shadow of death” have meant a lot to me. I suffer from depression and anxiety and so, the valleys can feel pretty dark. It’s a good reminder that I’m not alone as you can feel isolated.
‘I have to remind myself of these verses in Psalm 23 in the in-between times, when I’m feeling better. When I’m in a dark place, I feel very distant from God. That’s when it’s really hard to pray. But between times I rely on Psalm 23. When I look back I can really see that God has been with me, providing for me. This psalm covers it all for me, actually.’
