My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘There was a time in my life when I was made redundant. I’d worked for the same firm for ten years and was the only person who was made redundant. I thought it was so unfair. I couldn’t understand it. I was nearly 50 years old then and I was unemployed for ten months.
I learned what it is like to be signing on. It’s hard. You are not treated as if you are looking for work. It was a worrying time. I remember reading Romans 8.28 which says, “We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose”.
When I read that I realised that what had happened to me wasn’t personal. It was about something that was going on in the office. I realised that I was a very good secretary. I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong.
Reading that verse made me feel that the Lord was with me, which helped because I was angry, so angry. It felt as if the Lord was saying that he would be with me in this situation. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t straightforward, but he was with me. Later, I got a job as a medical secretary just round the corner from where I live.
I loved it. I worked there until I retired. I felt that the Lord had provided that for me. Because of what I went through, I have more empathy with people who are out of work. I’m a different person now, because of that experience.’
