My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘Whenever I get confused, or my faith seems to be wavering, the passage that I remember is in John 4 when Jesus is talking to the woman at the well, and he says, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth”.

‘When I first became a Christian, I had ambitions to read the Bible from the beginning to the end. Don’t laugh, but when I got to the list of the descendants of Adam, I thought, “What are these dead people doing?” and threw the Bible away and didn’t open it for years.

‘When I finally came to the Bible, I read it in three weeks, though I skipped the boring passages, and I concentrated on the words of Jesus. He’s the master of the whole thing. The Gospel of John is so immediate and it’s as if you were there.

‘These verses mean that I can go back and talk to Jesus. There are so many things that are mysterious in the Bible, things that I don’t understand, but I can understand this. It’s a rock to build on.’
