‘In Egypt, we’re seeing the Bible change lives. The Bible is changing relationships within families and between families. We’ve given the Bible to half a million people in the last three years, and we hope to provide half a million more in the coming two years.

‘Bible Society has been in Egypt since 1883 and most of that time it’s been concerned with printing and distributing the Bible. But in the last ten years we’ve focused on engagement with the Bible. And it’s working – people are grasping the message of God’s word for their lives.

‘We’re happy with what we’ve achieved so far, but not yet satisfied. We’re distributing hundreds of thousands of Bibles, but there are 15 million Christians in Egypt and more in other communities. So, what we’ve done is just a drop in the ocean. We have a dream, a much greater dream, to reach the whole country.

‘Christians in Egypt are proud to be Christian. Our country is in the Bible. We have Isaiah 19.25, ‘Blessed be Egypt my people’. The Church was rooted here from the beginning and it’s growing now. It’s a blessing for Bible Society to help the Egyptian Church.

‘Whenever we’re under pressure, even with the martyrdom in Libya in 2015, people are very strong in their faith. They don’t fear death because they have this belief in Jesus and in his word.

‘We put billboards in the streets saying the gospel is the most precious gift you can give to your friends or your neighbour. It’s a way to encourage people to think about giving Bible resources as gifts.

‘We’re keen to provide the Bible to everyone, not just Christians and churchgoers. We have bookshops in the main streets, not hidden away inside churches. They’re like regular bookshops, open to anyone.
