Prayers for peace were said as the country's Bible Society joined Ukrainian church leaders at a special service in Kyiv this week (Wednesday 16 February).
Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had declared the day a Day of Unity.
Religious leaders, including staff from the Ukrainian Bible Society, joined the service at St Sophia’s Cathedral, the home of Christianity in the country.
Ukrainian Bible Society spokesman Rostyslav Stasyuk, who attended the service said, ‘Listening to the words of the Lord’s Prayer beautifully sung by the choir, thinking how symbolic it is to be in the place where it all began, how God led his children through the darkest times, we all prayed that, above all, his will would be done, through us and in us, in our communities and our countries.’
The hauntingly beautiful service was held against the backdrop of increased tensions in Ukraine. Russia currently has an estimated 100,000 troops massed on its borders.
NATO Allies and western leaders concerned that Russia may be about to mount an invasion. Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, has warned that Russia should take the path of diplomacy and de-escalation, moving its troops from the border.
