‘It’s not difficult to be a Christian here,’ Hanan said. ‘The problem is that people are occupied with other things.’ So Hanan and her colleagues are working to change people’s view of the Bible.

As you know, this isn’t a book of dusty traditions. When we open it, we find new life. The Bible’s message is transformative, and it can make a real difference whatever we’re facing.

In Egypt, mission workers produce quiz resources to bring both adults and children deeper into Scripture. This kind of engagement is having a genuine effect on people’s daily lives.

Amal's story – When the Bible enters a family home

‘A lady called Amal came to see me,’ said Hanan. ‘She started crying and said her husband had lost his job because of covid. They had three children – aged ten, eight and three – and now they had lost their only source of income.

‘I always helped her with money, but at that time I felt the most important thing was to share God’s love with her. I gave her the Bible and a book full of quiz questions. I told her, “Read a chapter every day and answer the question. At the end, there’ll be a very nice prize for you.”

‘After a month, she’d finished the quiz book and I took her another. When her husband saw this quiz book he was very happy. He took the book and kissed it!

‘He said, “Before Amal read the Bible she was always complaining. She was shouting at me because I couldn’t find work. But when she read the Bible, she became a new person. She started to be very calm.”

‘Amal spent hours after she finished her housework reading the Bible and answering the quizzes, using a very small lamp so nobody would wake up. The whole family started doing the quizzes and studying the Bible. Before reading the Bible like this they were thinking of divorce. Now they’re a happy family.’

Every month the family gets a new volume of the quiz book, which takes them through the Bible chapter by chapter. On one level it’s fun because it’s a competition, but the experience of Hanan’s friend, Amal, shows it’s releasing the power of Bible in people’s lives.

‘She texts me her favourite verses,’ Hanan said. ‘The last one was Isaiah 41.13: “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (NIV).
