Here are five lessons we can learn from David's life:

1. Trust God in the face of fear (1 Samuel 17)

David’s encounter with Goliath is a vivid reminder of what it means to trust God fully. While others trembled before the giant, David declared his confidence in God: ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty ...’ (verse 45). This story inspires us to trust God when we face our own ‘giants’, whether they’re challenges at work, personal struggles or spiritual battles.

2. Be quick to repent (2 Samuel 12)

David wasn’t perfect – far from it. His sins, such as the incident with Bathsheba and Uriah, remind us of the cost of stepping outside of God’s will. However, when confronted by the prophet Nathan, David repented: ‘I have sinned against the Lord’ (verse 13). His example shows us the importance of acknowledging our mistakes, receiving forgiveness and turning back (repenting) to God with a sincere heart.

3. Worship with all your heart (2 Samuel 6.14–22)

When the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem, David danced with abandon before the Lord. His unashamed worship is a challenge to us: are we willing to worship God wholeheartedly, regardless of what others may think or how they may treat us? Worship isn’t about appearances; it’s about giving our hearts to God in gratitude and reverence.

4. Wait for God’s timing (1 Samuel 24)

David had multiple opportunities to take matters into his own hands and kill King Saul, who was pursuing him unjustly. Yet, he refused to harm the ‘Lord’s anointed’ (verse 6), choosing to wait for God’s timing rather than forcing his way to the throne. This patience reminds us that trusting God’s timing often requires restraint and faith, even when we feel ready to act.

As a ‘bonus’ lesson within this passage, we learn that even though David restrained himself from harming or outright killing Saul, he still felt convicted about what he did do, i.e. ‘cut off a corner of his robe’ (verses 4–6) as a sort of ‘David was here’ message to Saul. It’s not just about waiting for God to lead us, but also about how we might reason away other actions, justifying them in the moment.

There’s waiting for God, and then there’s waiting even when it may look like an opportunity has presented itself. More than anything, David wanted to do what was righteous in God’s eyes.

5. Seek God’s guidance (1 Samuel 23.1–5)

Throughout his life, David sought God’s will before making major decisions. Whether he was preparing for battle or addressing personal challenges, he regularly inquired of God. In 1 Samuel 23 he asks, ‘Shall I go and attack these Philistines?’ (verse 2), and even though his men were afraid and outnumbered he trusted in God’s answer.

This habit of seeking God’s guidance teaches us the value of bringing our decisions to him in prayer and trusting him to lead us, even when the answers aren’t what we expect or think we need.

In closing

David’s life, imperfect as it was, reminds us that faith, repentance and worship are vital components of a consistent and healthy relationship with God. While he certainly made mistakes, his willingness to seek God’s heart (1 Samuel 13.14) is a reminder of the grace and redemption available to all who pursue God.
