Spanish (Español)

Spanish, or español, is spoken by about 400 million people throughout the world. In Europe it is the main language of Spain, where it is called castellano (Castillian). It is also spoken in a slightly different form in Latin America, where it is sometimes called Hispanic. The Scriptures were translated by Casiodoro de Reina in 1569, which included the deuterocanonical books of the Vulgate. It was revised in 1602 by Cipriano de Valera. This Santa Biblia, called the Reina-Valera version, was revised in 1909, 1960 (RVR60) and 1995 (RVR95). The most widely accepted Catholic Bible is the Biblia de Jerusalén, published in 1967 and revised in 1973. Bible work is done by the Spanish Bible Society (Sociedad Bíblica en España) and the United Bible Societies (Americas Region). Dios Habla Hoy (DHH) was produced in 1994 and revised in 2002. The Traduccion en Lenguaje Actual (TLA) was produced in 2003. The Reina Valera Contemporanea (RVC) was produced in 2010. A new Bible called La Palabra was produced in 2010. Spanish Bibles are produced in Protestant and Catholic editions.
