My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘About 12 years ago we went to New Wine. We sang loads of songs that I didn’t know. My church was very traditional. But one said, “You are my shield, my shelter, my strong tower, my very present help in times of need”. I thought that was extraordinary.
Then I looked it up in the Bible. It’s in Psalm 18 and Psalm 28. They were such powerful words. I’d been given a copy of the Good News Bible when I was confirmed. I looked at the nice blue cover. I thought I knew what was inside. But when I heard these words I thought it was so powerful.
I had small children. I was a bit unsure that what I was doing in life was right. But then, I had a sense that God was my shield and strength. He was the things that I had been trying to be myself. These things were already there.
It never goes well, trying to be strong yourself. I try to do everything in my own strength quite a bit and then have to remember these verses and that I need to ask God for help. At that point, I realised that it wasn’t just me on my own, but that God, who I had heard about, had become someone that I could know, he was knowable, and that the words of that scripture were right.’
