From the 1990s I became a freelance internal auditor

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘From the 1990s I became a freelance internal auditor. I worked for lots of different clients and had a spell working for a large local council. I was contacted by someone I had worked for before. I checked with the council that I could do this work too and the lady concerned said it was fine.

‘On the Monday she came in and said, “I won’t fire you immediately, but you have two weeks and then you have to leave.” I was so angry, and I didn’t know what to do about it.

‘I complained to my colleagues that I had no income coming in, kids to bring up and then I said, “But I’m a Christian and the word of God says that God will meet my needs.” I was remembering Philippians 4.19, which says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus”.

‘But I was still angry, so I went for a walk. When I got back into the office the telephone rang. It was a senior auditor who I’d worked with before. They asked what my availability was. I was gobsmacked and so was everyone else in the office. My immediate boss said, “I know God will meet all your needs, but this is ridiculous”. I started the following Monday. It was brilliant.

‘I realised that God was in control, that he would do what he had said in his word. My level of anticipation that God would move was heightened. It enabled me to trust in God’s provision and care. If you have a regular job and a regular income you don’t have to worry, but when you are freelance you have to trust God.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
