My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'I became a Christian when I was 16 and my friends told me to get a Bible, so I did. When I was at university I decided to read the Bible from start to finish. I did it in about 18 months. It was amazing.

When I was 30 I was having my second child. She was due on Boxing Day but she came 18 days early. She was born in three hours. It was all amazing and wonderful. I was so thrilled. But the following morning the doctors came round and they listened to Eve’s heart.

She had a heart murmur. Lots of people have that, but it was a horrible feeling in my gut: “there’s something wrong with my baby”. Somehow that night I found the verse Isaiah 40.11.

That says, “He tends his flock like a shepherd: he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” I was the one that had young. I felt that God was saying, “I am leading you”. It was so moving. I felt very cared for.

When Eve was 11 days old I remember being so stressed. Chris, my husband, and I sat down and we said, “We have to get on top of this fear”. We read our Bible reading notes and the verse for that day was Isaiah 40.11.

We were completely gobsmacked. We cried. It was that verse that got us through, definitely. The hole in Eve’s heart was 2mm. It closed over in the end. She’s just turned 21 and is reading Psychology at Bath University. When it was her birthday I wrote her a letter telling her all of this. It was her beginning.'

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
