I grew up in Accra in Ghana

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'I grew up in Accra in Ghana: we studied the Bible at secondary school, we went to church, people preached on the bus. It was normal to me.

People felt that you needed to hear the word of God. It was preached at the market, where everybody comes. Nobody tells you, "You are making too much noise!" It’s not like that.

That was part of the foundation of my life. I had quite a few marriage proposals, but I didn’t take them seriously, because they weren’t people who read their Bible, who relied on the Lord.

Then, when I came to the UK to further my study in midwifery, I met my husband. He’s from Nigeria. It’s a different culture. The first time we met he said, "I want to marry you". I thought, "Is he serious?"

There were cultural differences, but we had a common foundation in the Bible and in going to church together. I saw that character in him. He was practising his faith.

The Word of God gave us common ground. I read Galatians 3.28. It says, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." This verse helped me overcome the cultural differences. That’s been with me all the years, this verse. It’s been in me. We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’ve been married for over 40 years now.'

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
