My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I grew up in Kumasi, a city in Ghana, the heart of Ghana really. There, church is part and parcel of your life as you grow up. My Dad bought me a Bible when I was very young and I used to enjoy looking things up in it.
I joined a musical group at church. There was always a nice atmosphere there. Ghanaian people like singing and dancing. People sing from their hearts.
When I came to the UK in 2001 to do my Masters’ Degree I was shocked when I first went to church. It’s unusual to go to church here. If you go to church here you might not see many young people.
My favourite passage in the Bible is the Parable of the Sower. It talks about planting seeds and according to the Bible, the seed is the Word of God. When you plant a seed, it takes time to germinate. A plant puts down strong roots, but you can’t see that happening. Knowing that has helped me to delve more into the Bible.
This parable gives me hope, because I think that we can’t fully understand our faith straight away. It’s a life-long journey. Now, as well as my day job, I’m a lay preacher in the Methodist church. I probably preach about once a month.
I feel very humble to have the opportunity to speak, to share the word of God. I don’t worry if people don’t say anything afterwards, because God is speaking. The Lord does the transformation, all we do is to say the words.’
