I had a brain tumour removed

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I had a brain tumour removed in 2010. It was benign, but in a risky place. I’m a doctor myself, so I know what it’s all about. When they diagnosed me I said, “There is no way you are cutting my head open”. So, they put the surgery on hold. They monitored the tumour, but it just got bigger.

They said, “We will have to do it”. It’s a terrifying prospect, especially when they tell you all the things that can go wrong. I struggled with it. I didn’t want my kids to know because they were in the middle of exams.

I had always loved the Bible. At one particular moment of crisis, the minister of our church gave me the verses 1 Peter 5.6-10, which include, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you… And the God of grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” I found that was very helpful. It made all the difference.

When it came to the surgery, I felt that there was nothing to worry about. I felt upheld by God and by people’s prayers. The surgery was due to take seven hours, but it took 3.5 or four hours. It went very smoothly. I’m fine now. I still have scans every 18 months, but it’s all good. All the way through, the word of God has been so important to support me and help me get through. It made me much closer to God and more confident in his love for me.’
