I used to be a detective in the police.

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I used to be a detective in the police. My faith is fresh compared with my life. I only got baptised eight years ago. I started Bible College 18 months ago and when I arrived, I had a fright.

‘I have never thought of myself as clever. I flunked out at school. Ask me to do something and I will. Ask me to write about it and I won’t. I thought, “I’m not good enough for this.”

‘The verse that has spoken to me is Philippians 4.13 which says, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” That’s important, because it shows that it’s through going through trials and problems that God will enable you to do things. I feel able to do this when I lean on God. When I take my eyes off God, I fall down.

‘I feel so convicted that I’m going in the right direction. I know I will be a Baptist minister, even though sometimes I feel scared because I don’t feel academic enough. But when I remember that God is with me, that turns into joy, because I know that God is calling me and my family, and that makes me feel privileged to be here.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
