My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'I was 22 or 23 in 1969. After church, we went back to the pastor’s home. They had a black and white TV, a hazy picture, and we watched the moon landings. It was riveting. This wasn’t just driving to the end of the street! I saw that God’s world was vast, and that we can go anywhere for God, even the moon.
That was when God confirmed the idea of cross-cultural mission to me. I felt a sense of "get out and do it. Get on with it." I’ve spent much of my life in mission work.
There’s a passage in 2 Corinthians 5.11-26 that I’ve grown into. Verse 15 says, "And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again." Towards the end of my career, I worked for an organisation that had a team of 300 people church planting in the Arab world. I really enjoyed that.
We are Christ’s ambassadors, and God has given us that responsibility. We, as believers, have prime responsibility to share the gospel. I felt real excitement when I was doing that. There is a joy in seeing God work in people’s lives. God has chosen to use us. Now, things have changed. People come to the UK and there are opportunities to talk to people here. That’s exciting. Travelling is exciting too, but the needs are more on our doorstep now.'
