My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'I was 27, married and we had a three-year-old son. I thought everything was rosy. But then my husband decided he couldn’t stay with me and off he went.
The bottom dropped out of my world. When you are down, down, down as far as you think you can go, you look up.
I’d been given a Bible at school. Though I thought I was a Christian, I was ignoring God. I wasn’t talking to him. So at this point I got my old school Bible out.
It had a paper plate in the front of it saying, “When you are lonely read this; when you are fearful read this,” and so on. So I did what it said. I started with the Psalms. And although I felt I was in deep do-do to be polite about it, the Psalms gave me the confidence that I would get through it and that my son and I would be OK.
That made me feel as high as a kite. It was like “wow”. I remember reading the verse from Deuteronomy, “Vengeance is mine says the Lord”. In time God healed that anger that I had and lifted it off me. It’s gone now, ancient history. Now I can just see the positives: I have a wonderful son from my marriage and my faith came out of the divorce. The Bible helped me on the way to that.'
