I was a teacher for 30 years

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I was a teacher for 30 years. I was the head of music at a big school. One day I was called in and someone had accused me of an impropriety. I was supposed to have done it 30 years ago. I was extremely determined to make sure my name was cleared. I was vindicated.

The police dropped it in four weeks as there was insufficient evidence. I read Job during that time. Job suffered a great deal more than I did. There were people who gave me advice and then there were people who didn’t say anything because they didn’t know what to say. Then there were people who were incandescent about it.

Job had all of that. I think it gave me strength to carry on. It was uplifting. Stopping [work and performing] was traumatic. It felt like nobody cares about you at that point. In that period of time, that could have been destroying.

I could have had a breakdown. Without the Bible, it would have been more difficult. Whether I would have gone under I don’t know. I have had a wonderful life, a very fulfilled life. But, in the one major difficulty I encountered, I found that my faith was strong and I could look into the Bible and find passages that gave me comfort.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
