My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'I was an oil trader. I was working 12-hour days, getting home late. Most days we would meet up with someone and we would go out in the evening. I was drinking a lot in pubs.
It was all about the entertaining, trying to do the deals. It was a high-pressure job. I felt like I was looking after my family, my wife and five kids, but I wasn’t when I look back at it.
I’d sit on the train and everyone was reading their paper and I’d read my Bible. What spoke to me most was a verse in Ephesians that talks about the relationship between men and women.
When I read that I felt that the responsibility for family life belonged to me. It had a dramatic effect on me. I think, if I hadn’t become a Christian, I’d have become an alcoholic. But those verses were pivotal.
They changed my attitude to my family, my wife and my marriage. I had a desire to make my family happy and care for them and give them what they needed. I’m not too sure we would have stayed married without it.'
