My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I worked in finance. I had a big salary and a comfortable life, but I felt a sense of calling to the ministry.

‘When I was trying to understand if God was calling me, I went back to the beginning of my story. I grew up in Nigeria and had a distant and difficult relationship with my father. With God there was the idea that there was a father who loved and accepted me. I didn’t have to try for God, and so I threw myself into the arms of God.

‘I actually wanted to be a pop star. I came to the UK to pursue a career in music. My career in finance enabled me to make an album. But I kept coming back to the idea that I was most at peace, most alive and a blessing to other people when I was with God.

John 17.3 captured it for me. It says, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” That created a clear picture for me. I wanted to help others know this God. I had a call, and a sense of peace about it. Then, it became less about what I was giving up and more about what I was going towards. It took away the burden of the decision.

‘I didn’t tell my father. I let someone else tell him. He’s been fine about it. He’s as supportive as anybody else.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
