My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I’d always read the Bible every day. But I was in a job that was all about following the money. Eventually, in a job like that, people become frustrated. Then, in 2011, I was in Kenya attending a conference.
There was a break for reflection. I came outside, into the foothills of Mount Kenya, and sat on the grass with lots of church leaders. Verses from Exodus came into my mind, particularly the words, “Set my people free”. It was a bingo moment.
I realised that the Bible could set people free, it could change everything. It was a little change in me that has since created a massive change.
In all the work we do now at the Mothers’ Union, we start with Bible readings. Every month I get letters from around the world saying how this has changed things for people. The local church can be disparaging about women. But when you start looking at what the Bible says about things, people’s eyes open wide. They realise that there’s a better way.
I was in Uganda once and we did this and at the end the local women said that they wanted to change their whole country!
I have seen this so many times all around the world. Seeing these changes in people has made me less cynical. It’s given me more confidence. I take more risks now than I would have done.
I feel that God will catch me when I step out. What’s great is that everyone has a bingo moment. Not just me. It doesn’t matter who you are, it will happen to you.'
