My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'It was 5 January a few years ago. I was taking down the Christmas tree at church and feeling very cross with the people who were meant to have done it. Our daughter was walking our dog, Bessie.
Everybody loved Bessie. I loved her. She was amazing. She was great at retrieving things. And on that walk, she died, just dropped dead, running for a ball. I thought, “I’ve had enough.”
I was bone weary with difficult people and situations and her dying was just the last straw. I ran to collect her body. On the way, I fell over and hurt my hand. I didn’t break it, but it really hurt.
That evening I read Isaiah 41.13 which says, “I am the Lord your God who holds you by your right hand. Do not fear, I will help you.” I thought that if God had a sense of humour like that, well, he and I could make it together.
I could carry on with the difficult people. It was a very sad day, but I’d encountered God through the scriptures and that helped.'
