My father was abusive

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘My father was abusive. He used to come home drunk and beat up myself and my older brother. We tried to protect our younger brother, but he was getting beaten up too.

‘He tried to tell me about it. But I didn’t listen. I went out with friends. When I came home, he had hung himself on the washing line. I found him. I blamed myself for years. I found heroin, and it numbed the pain.

‘One day, I read Joshua 1.9 which says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

‘This scripture opened up the Bible to me. Without that verse, I would be dead. It’s a great verse. It’s the promise from God. I took it as a promise that he’s with me. Now, when bad things happen, I have this to be equipped with, without using heroin. I can face things head-on now. I feel free now. I can take my problems to the Lord. The future for me is bright.’

I keep coming back to John 6.67–68 where Jesus has been teaching and people are finding it hard to understand and lots of his peripheral followers are falling away.
