My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘My favourite passage from the Bible is John 1.1–5, which says, “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” I love hearing it at Christmas. It gives me a tingle. It really matters to me that the light shines in the darkness. Sometimes, it’s very difficult to say where the light is, but it’s there.
‘My husband was in his forties when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. We had five children, so it was a shock. To begin with you can have drugs. But in the end, you can’t go on fighting it.
‘Despite this, my husband went forward for ordination. I didn’t think they would take him because of his Parkinson’s, but they did. It was a huge change to sell our house and move. But you have to have faith that God is somehow behind it.
‘He didn’t have a long ministry, just eight years, but you don’t know what it achieved. When he died, I had many letters from people who said that they were glad that he had been ordained because he had helped them. You can’t regret that.
‘These words from John were an anchor. I felt that there was something to hang onto. There was always someone there.’
