My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘Words from John 20.27 brought me to faith 30 years ago. I had been invited to a local service at Easter. I had a bit of a battle that morning, because my father asked me to help move some cattle, but I knew I had to go to church. It was hard saying “no” to him.
‘I’d heard the story of Easter up to the empty tomb, but not doubting Thomas. When I heard the words that Jesus spoke to him, “stop doubting and believe”, I realised that I was just like doubting Thomas.
‘I believed in Jesus, but I struggled with the idea that he was alive. I believed in the resurrection, but couldn’t get my head around the fact that he was alive now. That reading spoke to me. The words have never left me.
‘I had a real sense of reassurance. From there, things started to make sense. I had never read the Bible before, but when I started, I grasped how relevant it is for our life here and now.
‘My family were a bit bemused to start with. But they saw a positive change in me. A year later I was baptised on Easter Sunday.
‘The person who had been praying for me was a neighbour. She was in the last weeks of her life. I let her know what had happened and she was thrilled. I was able to be a blessing to her at the end as we spent time praying together.’
