One Bible writer found himself in difficult circumstances, but still found ways to experience peace. He encouraged those he wrote for to do the same. Here’s what worked for him.
Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus ... Fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honourable.
It might surprise you to discover that these words were written by someone in the confines of prison. In difficult conditions, and awaiting trial in Rome for a crime he didn’t commit, Paul, the author, is still able to trust that his God will give him peace. In fact, he dishes out this advice as if it’s written from experience. You get the impression he knows it because he’s experienced it.
Elsewhere in the letter he says, ‘I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.’
The ‘him’ Paul’s referring to is Jesus, who he believed Jesus was God in human form – and as such, pretty powerful! Paul’s faith in Jesus was the foundation on which his attitude towards worry lay.
